Product photography is the art of taking pictures that are used to create awareness of a particular product or service to the public. The photographs are mostly used by advertising agencies to market a product. These photographs are used in things like brochures and leaflets, menus in cafes and restaurants, and similar commercial uses where photographs enhance a text.
The photograph I chose to emulate was the product converse shoes. I was inspired by the photo on the left to take the photo on the right. They are similar in the sense that they both are taken outside in the sunlight and their subject matter is converse shoes. However, they are every different in composition. In the photo on the left, the point of view is straight on looking at the subject matter taken by another person while in my photo the point of view is from the subject matter and the photo was taken by the subject. The light source in the first photo if from behind. This creates a silhouette of the shoes on the ground. Its silhouette creates leading lines in the photo In my photograph, the light is coming in from the left and creates a shadow across the pavement. The light also creates shadows on the shoes themselves as well as the subject matter's jeans. The first photo has a shallow depth of field and is edited to be blurry in every part of the picture except for the shoes themselves. My photo has a larger depth of field as the foreground and middle ground is in focus while the background is blurred. I the first picture, the background consists of a repetition of trees while in the background of my photo there is only one tree. The first picture has only one line in the photo where the pavement meets the trees while my photograph has two: the shadow on the pavement and the line created when the pavement meets the grass.
I chose this subject matter because I find the Converse design to be a cross between sophisticated and hipster. This clash between the two polar opposite ideas is what drew me and other to like the converse brand. It's a different design and look that just your stereo typical sneakers. This is why i chose to photograph converse.
