Photo Essay
For my photo essay, I chose to photograph UMass Amherst when I went on a college visit over vacation. I selected to photograph UMass because it is currently the college I am most interested in attending once I graduate. With this topic, I am trying to portray how architecturally and physically appealing the college is. These pictures portray the everyday life of a college student outside of the academic field and in more in an architectural lens. The order of these photographs contribute to the overall theme of the series. They are ordered in a way to unify the photos in more than one way. They are unified in that they all lack color. But they are also unified in that they all their subjects coincide with one another, nature and architecture. Conceptually, they're all photographed straight on and almost all the subjects are centered and do not abide by the rule of thirds. The lighting in each in kept dim and the beauty in the photos is drawn towards the positive and negative space created because they are in black and white. The sky is a continuity throughout the series, thus being another unifier throughout each photograph.
